Newcastle upon Tyne, 4th November, 2024. The Institute of Supply Chain Management (IoSCM) proudly hosted the 2024 Supply Chain and Sustain Chain Awards, celebrating the achievements of individuals and organisations that exemplify excellence, innovation, and sustainability across the supply chain. The prestigious event brought together leaders and industry experts to recognise and celebrate those who are advancing the supply chain field and shaping the future of sustainable business practices.
The Sustain Chain Awards
The evening began with The Sustain Chain Awards. These awards were introduced to recognise outstanding contributions to environmental and social sustainability within the supply chain sector. These awards honour organisations making a measurable difference in areas such as carbon reduction, corporate social responsibility, and workplace safety. This year’s winners are:
Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Improvements in the Supply Chain – this was awarded to The Brick for their innovative approach to tackling poverty and reducing waste. By partnering with companies to redirect surplus goods – including essential household items like bedding, cleaning supplies, and clothing – the Brick by Brick project ensures these products reach people in need rather than ending up as waste.

Delivering Positive Change in the Reduction of Single Use Plastics – this was awarded to the Mayborn Group (Tommee Tippee) for their exceptional commitment to sustainability. Already recognised for their impressive record in sustainable practices, the Mayborn Group has taken significant steps to eliminate single-use plastics from their operations. Beyond reduction, they have come up with innovative ways to use plastics more sustainably, showcasing their dedication to responsible and ethical practices across the business.

Commitment to Reducing Carbon Emissions – this was awarded to Lumo Trains for their pioneering efforts as Britain’s first 100% electric train fleet. Based in Newcastle, Lumo’s trains are setting a new standard for eco-friendly travel, producing 25 times less carbon than traditional air travel. This fully electric approach not only reduces emissions significantly but also demonstrates Lumo’s commitment to sustainable, green practices throughout their operations.

Delivering Corporate Social Improvements within Business – this was awarded to RelyOn Nutec for their exceptional commitment to safety, responsibility, and sustainability in high-risk sectors. Sustainability Champion – this was awarded to Thorn Lighting for their leadership in promoting sustainable practices in the global lighting industry. By reducing their environmental impact and supporting clients’ sustainability goals, Thorn has influenced the construction sector to prioritise eco-friendly lighting solutions in major projects across the UK and internationally.

Dedication to Creating a Safe Working Environment – this was awarded to Teesside Airport for its outstanding commitment to health and safety, extending beyond regulatory compliance to foster a culture of well-being. Delivering Sustainable Improvements within the Workplace – this was awarded to Finlay Beverages for their remarkable progress in their Sustainable Future 2030 strategy. With 94% of waste recycled, reused, or reclaimed, and 82% of energy from renewable sources, Finlay Beverages demonstrates strong commitment to sustainability. Additionally, they ensure a responsible supply chain with 100% traceable tea and 94% of green bean coffee exceeding industry standards.

Outstanding Charity or Community Project – this was awarded to The Military Veteran Football Club for its commitment to supporting military veterans and Armed Forces members. Through inclusive football sessions across 11 UK locations, the club fosters physical and mental well-being, social connection, and community support. Run by veterans, the project keeps sessions affordable, providing mental health and first aid training for over 200 participants.

The Supply Chain Awards
When The Sustain Chain awards had concluded, it was time for the main event, The Supply Chain Awards. These awards celebrate innovation, leadership, and professional development in the wider supply chain. The award categories and winners include:
Contribution to Innovation – this was awarded to Daniel Beatty, Global Product and Packaging Productivity Manager at Tommee Tippee (Mayborn Group). Daniel spearheaded the initiative to reduce single-use plastics by removing them, sourcing sustainable alternatives, and closely tracking the impact of these changes.

Special Recognition for Advancing the Professional Development of Our Armed Forces – this was awarded to SSgt Stephen Piper for his dedication to supporting continuous learning within the Armed Forces. He organises training sessions, CPD fairs, and workshops on skills like project management and CV writing, helping service members prepare for life beyond duty. His proactive efforts have fostered a strong culture of professional development among personnel in Marne Barracks and beyond.

Defying the Odds – this was awarded toLilyana Videnova for her outstanding dedication to her Level 5 studies with IoSCM. Now leading a boutique consultancy, Gary supports other organisations in achieving supply chain excellence.
