Just under 22% of the UK’s population is classed as disabled. Although this is quite a large percentage (nearly a quarter of the entire UK), many people with a disability struggle with employment. In fact, the employment rate for people with disabilities is 29% lower than that of non-disabled people.
With such a large employment gap, it’s clear that something needs to be done. 1 in 3 disabled people feel that they suffer from prejudice, which hinders their working opportunities. Organisations need to overcome preconceived notions and ensure they’re taking the necessary steps to make their recruitment opportunities as inclusive as possible.
What is Disability Confident?
Disability Confident is a government scheme, designed to encourage the inclusivity of people with disabilities within the working environment. When an organisation obtains this certification, it demonstrates its dedication to creating a welcoming workplace. The certification includes all disabilities and health conditions. By committing to become a Disability Confident Employer, organisations need to:
- Have a fully-inclusive and accessible recruitment process
- Offer interviews to disabled people who meet the minimum job criteria
- Anticipate and provide reasonable adjustments when required
- Support existing employees who have disabilities and health conditions
