4 Tips to a Smooth Job Interview

Congratulations! You have made it to the interviewing process. Now what? For many candidates, this is the most stressful and high-stakes part of the job hiring process. However, if you take the time to prepare appropriately beforehand, this does not have to be a nerve-wracking ordeal. If completed properly, interviews provide you with an opportunity to stand out and distinguish yourself from other candidates.

Research

Ideally, before you apply for a position within a company, you would conduct some surface-level research about the job title, incorporating some of the key ideas into your application and cover letter. For example, if you are applying for a digital marketing position within the company, be familiar with what type of personalities work well in that position and what relevant experience you have that may set you apart from other candidates. Now that you have earned yourself an interview, direct your focus onto who the company is, what they believe, and what goals they have for the future. Being familiar with the company’s morals and foundational values can be a huge asset when it comes to answering the interview questions down the road. You first need to know what the company needs before you can properly fulfil its needs as an employee.

Be Prepared

Secondly, you must prepare answers to some of the common questions asked by interviewers ahead of time. For example, you will likely be asked some variation of, “What makes you a good candidate for this job? Why should we hire you?” These kinds of questions are simple enough with a well-rehearsed answer, but if you are surprised by them, or you feel unsure about how to answer them, you can come off as insecure or unprepared. Research some of the most frequent job interview questions ahead of time and have a general idea of how you would like to answer them if asked. This step of preparation in and of itself can remove a lot of the nerves and stress from an interview and help you to feel confident and valuable.

Questions?

More than likely, toward the end, your interviewer will ask, “Do you have any questions for me?” This is a particularly important part of the interview process, and your actions here can once again set you apart from other candidates and make you memorable to your interviewer. Prepare at least two comprehensive and intelligent questions that you would like to ask regarding something about the company, the responsibilities of the job that you are interested in, or something that would be personal to your interviewer, such as asking what their favourite part of working for the company is. If done correctly, being able to ask a question or two can once again reiterate to your interviewer how eager you are about a job opportunity within the company.

Appearance and Attitude

It is the day of your interview! Keep in mind that your interview starts as soon as you step out of your car and into the company building. Be polite, be friendly, and be confident. The way you present yourself and the look on your face will be the first impression that your interviewer has of you. Dress modestly and appropriately, maintain a pleasant expression, and walk with confidence, knowing that you have prepared for this moment as well as you could. Now is your chance to demonstrate your genuine excitement for the opportunity at this company and to prove that you are the best candidate for this position.

While a job interview may seem intimidating, there is no need to fear it as long as you have properly prepared. Keep in mind that the company is trying to get to know you as a potential employee, not trying to trip you up on your application or grill you on company knowledge. You have already been hand-chosen from the pool of applications. Now is the time to show them why you are their best choice. Gather your thoughts, rehearse if you need to, and walk into the interview knowing that you have what it takes to dominate.
