The Introduction to Ship and Port Operations Management core unit investigates shipping and port operations, including the range of activities involved in shipboard operations in port and at sea and the berthing and unberthing of merchant vessels. It also covers marine legislation, dangerous goods classification, maritime publications, environmental legislation, IMO convention, ship’s cargo equipment and key terms concerning shipboard geography, nautical and cargo terminology.  Indicative content includes:

  • Berthing and unberthing operations of merchant vessels, cargo stowage space calculation, hazardous cargo, and acceleration forces on ships
  • Marine legislation application, including dangerous goods classification, environmental legislation, and IMO conventions
  • A ship’s equipment, including decking and cargo securing equipment
  • Key terms concerning shipboard geography, nautical and cargo terminology

To achieve the Level 3 Diploma you need to complete a minimum of 40 credits. Every unit has a credit value assigned to it. Your core unit, Introduction to Ship and Port Operations Management, provides 10 of the credits you need.
