There is no doubt about it, the shipping industry is the driving force that keeps the modern supply chain moving. In this installment of Industry Facts we take a look at some interesting details about the shipping sector and the major players that you might not know!
From size, volume and capacity this enormous industry continues to advance in capabilities, adopting new technologies and working in partnership with the rest of the logistics industry to deliver much needed raw materials, parts and products that keep the global Supply Chain operational.
We’ve put together our top three facts on the industry;
1. In an average year, a large containership travels three-quarters of the distance to the moon.

That’s around 179,000 miles per year. The same distance as travelling around the world 7.1 times!
2. MP-Mersk is the leading containership operator in 2020, with a market share of 17.6%. Carrying millions of tons of cargo every day, their network covers over three hundred ports in one hundred and twenty countries. The world’s largest overseas cargo and freight carrier ship an average of £675 billion pounds worth of goods each year across their five hundred and ninety containerships.
3. Containerships continue to increase in size, and capability, with the world’s largest vessels now able to carry more than 21,000 containers – to get an idea of what these monumental ships look like here’s a video showing the OOCL Hong Kong docking docking at Felixstowe;
