Celebrating Armed Forces Week
Every year, the UK celebrates Armed Forces Week, providing a special opportunity to pay tribute to those who serve in our military. Specifically, the week commences on Monday 24th June and precedes Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29th June. It is the perfect opportunity to come together and honour the service of our armed forces.
The History of Armed Forces Week
The tradition of Armed Forces Week began in 2009, evolving from Veterans Day, which was first observed in 2006. The aim was to broaden the focus to include all those who serve in the British Armed Forces – past, present, and future. The week-long celebration provides an opportunity for the nation to demonstrate its gratitude while also recognising the invaluable contributions of military personnel and veterans. It also celebrates their families, who support and make sacrifices every day.
The week also includes Reserves Day, which highlights the importance of our Reservists. Reservists consist of those who have lives and careers outside of the military, who dedicate their spare time to serving our country. Many Reservists have experience in the military and continue in a part-time role after completing their service. Although, you don’t need to have full-time service under your belt to become a Reservist. It also consists of individuals with full-time civilian roles. We interviewed Darren Rhodes, a member of the IoSCM Advisory Council, check out the interview on the IoSCM blog to hear more about his experience as an Armed Forces Reservist.
The Importance of Armed Forces Week
Armed Forces Week is a time to reflect on the rich history of the British Armed Forces and the crucial role they play in keeping the nation safe. Additionally, it provides appreciation by highlighting their bravery and dedication. It also recognises the sacrifices of the military personnel and their families. Besides showing appreciation, the event also fosters a better understanding of the military’s role amongst the public while underscoring the ongoing commitment to supporting veterans.
Moreover, the event is important for the future, as it encourages younger generations to understand the values of service. Consequently, it can also inspire them to consider careers in the military or to support the armed forces in various capacities.
